How to choose the right hot sauce?
Taste is a completely subjective thing, so there is no one right choice. The easiest thing to do is to start with yourself. First, think about how spicy you want it to be. Something mild for every day or something that really hits the spot? Then look at what you will use the sauce with most often. Pizza, burgers, eggs, BBQ, Asian food… different sauces create a completely different vibe. Each sauce also has a flavor profile that quickly tells you whether it goes more in the fruity, garlicky, smoky or sour direction.
To make your selection easier, we've divided the sauces by spiciness and by "where it fits" categories so you don't have to guess. But if you still get stuck, we're always available to answer questions or come in person to the physical store and together we'll find something that will really suit you.
Which sauce is good for beginners?
If you're new to hot sauces, a good trick is to look at what's selling best . These sauces aren't bestsellers by accident. They're balanced, flavorful, and work well on a variety of foods. It's also a good idea to check the heat level so you know roughly what you're getting into and don't go overboard.
If you ask us, you can't go wrong with the following:
Secret Aardvark Habanero It's a true daily driver sauce. Medium hot, very tasty and goes almost anywhere.
Dirty Dick's Hot Pepper Sauce is sweeter, a little tropical, and surprisingly good on Asian food or grilled meats.
Heartbeat Camp Sauce is milder, slightly smoky, and insanely good for sandwiches, burgers, or eggs.
Torchbearer Garlic Reaper isn't exactly a beginner's spice, but if you love garlic and hot things, this is the pure essence of flavor.
Da Bomb is a more special category. Extremely hot, ideal for a joke, a challenge, or just a few drops for a concrete kick with food.
If you're not sure, start with the less spicy ones and then slowly work your way up. This makes the experience much more fun.
How hot is it really?
Hotness is a very relative thing. What is perfectly fine for one person may be too much for another. It all depends on your tolerance and how often you eat hot food. That's why we have our own system of hotness, marked with a scale from slightly hot (1) to extremely hot (5), which should serve as a guide, not an absolute truth.
For easier understanding:
1/5 means almost no heat, more flavor than heat.
2/5 is moderate heat, somewhere in the range of classic Tabasco.
3/5 is already burning and you are very aware of it.
4/5 It burns very well and the heat stays for a while.
5/5 is reserved for the brave or those with a really high tolerance.
If you're not sure, we always recommend starting a notch lower and seeing how you like it. The heat should support the flavor, not overpower it.
Do you have a low tolerance for heat?
Believe me, we're not big fans of extreme heat either. It's cool to try, for a challenge or a little fun, but not for every day. We much prefer sauces where the heat doesn't take over everything, but leaves room for the flavor to come through and complement the food nicely.
That's why we offer a lot of sauces labeled a little (1/5) or slightly (2/5) hot. These are sauces that you can use every day without worry, without sweat and tears, and still add that "something extra" to your food. If you think hot is not for you, you might be pleasantly surprised with these.
Does hot sauce ruin the taste of food?
Absolutely not. Unless you're really overdoing it or going for something extreme likeThermageddon or Doomed . A good hot sauce is all about flavor. Fruitiness, acidity, garlic, smoke... the heat comes along, it's not the star, but it's a very important element.
We see hotness as an important experience that supports everything else. Think of hot sauce in a similar way to garlic or salt. Used in moderation, it will add depth, more layers, and ultimately more enjoyment to your food. The goal isn't to burn you, but to make you want another bite ;)
What is the difference between types of chili peppers?
Today, we know a huge number of types of chilies, which come from different parts of the world and are quite different from each other. Each hot sauce in our offer is basically characterized by its main player – the chili that contains the most. This determines not only the spiciness, but also the character of the taste.
Habanero is often fruitier and more aromatic, jalapeño is light, fresh and friendly, ghost pepper is sharp and aggressive, and chili pepper is a category that contains sauces with different types and it is difficult to determine the main player. When a producer cleverly combines a certain type of chili with spices, acids or fruit, something develops from it that is more than just hot. That is when true poetry in a bottle is created.
